RSA Home School

Distinctives of RSA’s Home School Program:

• Is closely joined to our school, which is designed for students with an interest in the visual and performing arts. Home study students participate in electives, performances, clubs, assemblies, school field trips, camp-outs, and theme days.
• Is very structured; is based on the excellent, proven, successful Saxon math and Spalding phonics – both given at your child’s assessed individual level regardless of grade or age. This gives a strong academic backbone to our creative endeavors here.
• Has no ceiling; your child can excel to the best of his or her ability.  We can pull in resources as needed.
• Correlates to the school’s 3 year rotating thematic cycle, as well as to the California state standards.
• Includes a VAPA (visual and performing arts) requirement which may be met in several ways.
• Requires the parent and child to meet with the home school coordinator once per week for the first 4-5 weeks, then twice monthly with good progress to make new assignments and document and collect finished work.
• Has very high standards, includes a considerable amount of reading and writing, and is very strict on meeting and assignment requirements.  Students will be returned to the district of residence if requirements are not met.
• Offers an optional all day enrichment class once per week -- one day for the younger children and one day for the older ones. Music, writing projects, thematic activities, integrated math/science activities and so on may be seen as a supplement to the general home school program.
• Allows some leeway for experienced home school parents to use alternative materials for certain pieces of the curriculum on a case by case basis.
• Lets home schoolers enjoy the company of the regular RSA students during lunch and recess on the enrichment class day, as well as during elective classes and other activities throughout the year.

Sequence for New RSA Home School Enrollment

1. Obtain enrollment forms from school office (247-6933), fill out, and return (2200 Eureka Way.) One of our two directors, Jean Hatch or Margaret Johnson, will look it over and determine if your child’s needs can be met in a home school setting.

2. Make appointment with home school coordinator, in Room 120, school # 247-6933 to:

• discuss details of program to see if this is what you’d like
• design contracts, when enrollment application is approved by directors
• make appointments for writing, reading, and math assessments

3. Make appointment for picking up books, resources, and initial assignments for the week school begins in the fall.

4. Watch the RSA website www.rsarts.com  for information regarding before-school picnics, get-togethers, field trips etc.  Note: important information packets are handed out at the before-school picnic!  Download and read the newsletters, calendars, etc.  Make sure the homeschool coordinator has your current contact information, including your e-mail.  Watch for e-mails regarding homeschool events.  Check your “mail” in Room 120 (on the back of the copier room door) at least weekly to collect handouts that are not online. Be involved in the school. Keep “in the loop.”
